The slate top is varnished, so there is a sheen, and it protects the surface from kids leaving water bottles on the table. The slate pieces are quite ragged, adding to the rustic look. The tables are very solid and heavy. Everything Furniture was great. The tables came about a week after we ordered, and we didn't have to pay shipping.
